Research indicates that the connection between client and counselor is one of the most important determinants of success in counseling.
Considering how important this decision can be, you should know a bit about me, before you make a choice:
My philosophy of counseling is based on a collaborative approach such that clients and I work together to identify, clarify and accomplish goals as a team. I believe that balance is an important aspect of wellness and so I am a strong advocate for the health of the entire person: mind, body and spirit. Others describe me as down-to- earth, easy to talk to, compassionate and professional. I decided to become a counselor later in life because I believe that no matter who we are, we are all capable of growth and healing. I find it most rewarding to be part of that process. Whether you are wanting relief from uncomfortable symptoms or to improve your performance in some area of your life, I would like to help.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from John F. Kennedy University and a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from George Fox University. My major coursework included: counseling theory and advanced skills, group theory and therapy, addiction, stress & trauma, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, spirituality, organizational psychology, sport & exercise psychology and interpersonal neurobiology. My post-graduate studies are directed towards stress, trauma, resilience and performance.
Research indicates that physical fitness is critical to mental health. As a counselor, I’m also interested in the exercise and nutrition habits of my clients. Having been a high school coach in the public school system, I understand how important sports can be to young people. Being a master level endurance athlete, I understand the challenges of training, dealing with injuries, & staying on top of our game while we age.
Before deciding to become a counselor, I spent more than twenty years leading teams in large and small business operations. As a result, I have experience both as an employee and as a business owner. If you have challenges related to your work or business, I can help.
Having learned to successfully balance a demanding career, marriage, parenting and continually pushing my personal comfort zones, I can share solutions with clients that are based on research and proven in the real world.
